Gordon’s hands trembled as he unfolded his mother’s letter. Ruth’s handwriting filled the page, the same steady script from the water-bill note, and as he read, the anger that had carried him to my door that morning began draining out of his face. She had written it herself, months before she passed, knowing exactly what her son would do once she was gone. She knew he would challenge the will. She knew he would come looking for someone to blame. And she knew he would never expect that blame to circle back to the eighteen, no, the twenty-three thousand dollars he had quietly moved into his own company.

Marcus asked me to give them a moment, but Ruth’s letter was not private the way Gordon hoped. She had written it to be read aloud if necessary, and Marcus, as the attorney reviewing the estate, read the crucial lines himself. Ruth had documented everything. The revoked authority. The unauthorized transfers. The medical evaluation proving she was of sound mind. And then the sentence that made Gordon set the letter down on my table and stare at his own hands. “I am not confused, Gordon. I am simply finally paying attention.” She had changed her will not because a neighbor influenced her, but because her own son had stolen from her and assumed she was too old to notice.
