The Concrete Block He Poured In My Driveway Cost Him Far More Than Peace

The person I called was my daughter, Vanessa, and Trevor had no idea who she was, because I had never once mentioned her. Vanessa was a municipal code enforcement supervisor for the county, the exact office that governs what a person can and cannot pour onto a residential property line. I told her calmly that my neighbor had sealed my legally deeded driveway with a poured concrete block, using two workers, without permits, on property that was mine. There was a long pause. Then she said the words that started everything. “Mom, send me a photo right now. He just made the biggest mistake of his year.”

Five minutes later, it was not the police who arrived. It was Vanessa’s own department, along with a building inspector she had dispatched the moment she saw my photo, because a poured concrete obstruction blocking a residence is not a neighbor squabble. It is an illegal structure, a fire-access violation, and destruction of property all at once. Trevor came running toward my house, face drained of color, when he saw the county truck and recognized the logo. “NO! Anything but this! Please, stop it!!!” But the inspector was already photographing the block, the missing permits, and the fresh tire tracks of Trevor’s two workers. The peace he wanted had arrived. Just not for him.
