The Road They Abandoned Me On Led Straight Back To Everything I Owned

The sharp corner in my purse belonged to a small leather folder, and inside it was the truth my children had never bothered to learn. The house was not my husband’s to leave. The business was not my son’s to claim. Both had been founded, financed, and legally held in my name for thirty years, since long before I became “Mom,” back when I was Adele Vance, the woman who built a regional supply company from a single truck and a loan I signed alone. I called the person whose number I had memorized decades ago, before cell phones made memory lazy. My attorney. “Rosalind,” I said when she answered, “it’s Adele. My son just left me on a county road and told me the house and the business are his. I think it’s time we remind everyone whose name is actually on the paperwork.”
