The Letter From The Woman Behind The Fence Unraveled A Decade Of Lies

I opened the DNA packet with hands that no longer felt like my own. Inside were results, clinical and undeniable, comparing two samples. One was labeled with the name of Delphine’s young son, the quiet boy I had glimpsed only rarely over eight years, always at a distance, always on the other side of that black iron. The second sample was labeled Garrett Ashford. The match was conclusive. The child Delphine had raised alone next door, the child my husband had taught me to fear along with his mother, was Garrett’s son. The fence had never been about danger. It had been about proximity to a truth he could not afford for me to see.

I turned back to the handwritten pages and read them straight through, the rain steady against the glass. Delphine’s story came out in careful, aching lines. Ten years ago, before I ever married Garrett, she had been in a relationship with him. When she became pregnant, he left, married me within the year, and moved us into the house beside hers, close enough to monitor her, close enough to control the narrative. When she refused to disappear, he built the fence, spread the word that she was unstable, and made certain that if she ever spoke, no one, least of all his wife, would believe her. She had spent eight years as a prisoner of my husband’s lie, watching me through the bars, unable to reach me.
