The Free Garbage Service My Entitled Neighbor Demanded Came With A Legal Price

“The condition,” I said sweetly, “is that we make it official. If your garbage is going to live on my property, we’ll put it in writing, so there’s no confusion later.” Gwendolyn laughed, delighted, assuming I meant some neighborly handshake. She agreed on the spot, even joked that I could “write up whatever I wanted.” So that afternoon I typed a simple one-page agreement stating that Gwendolyn Harlow would be depositing her household waste on my property, and I asked her to sign it. Still grinning, certain she’d won, she scrawled her name across the bottom without reading a single line. I kept the original and gave her a copy, and I thanked her warmly.

What Gwendolyn didn’t know was that I had spent twenty years working as a paralegal before my fresh start. That signed paper was not a favor. It was a documented admission, in her own handwriting, that she had been illegally dumping waste on private property, dated and confirmed. And it was only the first piece. For the next two weeks, I did exactly what I’d promised. I let her leave her garbage beside my cans. I just photographed every bag, logged every date, and quietly called two offices in town whose numbers Gwendolyn had never once considered.
