The Wedding Gift I Took Back Revealed Exactly Who My Son Had Married

Nathan reached me first, breathless, his tie loosened, confusion written across his face. “Mom, where are you going? Sabrina said you weren’t feeling well and wanted to leave early.” So that was the lie she had told him. I looked at my son, this boy I had raised alone, and I decided he deserved the truth in plain words. “Your wife seated me outside beside the garbage cans, Nathan. She told me I didn’t count.” His head turned slowly toward Sabrina, whose panic was no longer about my feelings. It was about the envelope she had watched me slip back into my purse, and what she had just realized it might contain.

“Mom, that can’t be right,” Nathan started, but a bridesmaid who had followed them out quietly confirmed it, showing him a photo she’d taken of the folding chair, my silver place card propped between two black bins. Nathan went pale. Then he asked the question Sabrina had been dreading since the moment my smile went calm. “What was in the envelope?” I held my purse a little tighter. Sabrina answered before I could, her voice suddenly sweet and shaking. “It’s just a card, baby, it doesn’t matter.” But Nathan knew me. He knew I did not spend three years preparing a card. He looked at me and asked again, gently this time. “Mom. What was the gift?”
