The House She Called Her Own Had Always Belonged To Me

I unfolded the first page and turned it toward her. It was the deed to the house, and the name printed on it was mine. Not Preston’s. Not Corinne’s. Mine. “This house,” I said quietly, “was never yours to redecorate, and it was never Preston’s to give you. Walter and I bought it outright fifteen years ago. When you two married and needed a place to live, I let you move in. I never signed it over. I only let you believe I had.” Corinne snatched the page, read it twice, and the color drained from her face the way it drains from anyone who realizes the ground they’ve been standing on was never theirs.

She turned to Preston, expecting him to defend her, to insist there had been some agreement. But Preston was staring at the deed too, and I watched him understand. He had assumed, as she had, that the house was his inheritance-in-waiting, that his mother was a guest in a home she quietly owned. “Mom,” he said slowly, “you own this house?” I nodded. “I own this house. I own the cars in the garage. And I have spent three years watching your wife plan how to have me declared incompetent so she could get the rest.” Corinne opened her mouth, but for once no cruelty came out, because the elder-law attorney’s file was already sitting on the coffee table between us.
