Two Days Later My Mother Came Back With A Locksmith And One Final Plan

Two days later, at 4:15 in the afternoon, I heard it before I saw it. The scrape of metal against my front door lock, patient and deliberate, followed by my mother’s voice giving quiet instructions to someone. I stood in my hallway with my heart pounding, watching the doorknob rattle as a stranger’s tools worked the mechanism she no longer had a key for. She had brought a locksmith. She was going to have my locks drilled and replaced, so that this time the key would be hers and I would be the one locked out of my own home.

But I had spent those two days doing exactly what she never expected me to do. I had not cried. I had not called begging her to understand. I had gone to my lawyer, filed the police report as a formal record, and changed something she did not know about yet. When the door finally swung open and she stepped inside with her chin raised, ready to announce that the house would run on her terms now, she found me sitting calmly at my own kitchen table with a folder open in front of me. And a man in a suit standing beside me who was very clearly not my friend.
