I Judged My Daughter’s Tattooed Boyfriend Until He Called Me at Three in the Morning

My daughter brought her boyfriend home. Tattoos covered his arms. He worked construction. I looked him up and down and said we had raised her for better than that. She left without a word. Six months later an unknown number called at three in the morning. This is your daughter’s boyfriend, he said. I’m sorry. This morning she was in an accident on the way to work. She’s in surgery. She asked me to call you.

I drove to the hospital with my hands tight on the wheel. He was in the waiting room in the same work clothes I had dismissed, holding her phone and a paper bag with her glasses inside. He stood when he saw me. He said she had been talking about me the night before and that she missed the Sunday calls. He had been the one who drove her to every appointment after the first scan came back unclear, and he had not told me because she asked him not to.

The doctor came out and said she was stable. He stayed in the chair while I went in. When I came back he was still there, elbows on his knees, the bag of glasses between his feet. I sat beside him. I told him I had been wrong at the door. He said he did not need me to say it. He only needed her to wake up and see both of us in the room.

She opened her eyes the next afternoon. He was the first person she looked for. I stood on the other side of the bed and did not ask him to leave. The tattoos were still there. So was the chair he had kept warm for six hours. She reached for his hand, and then she reached for mine.
