I Came Home From A Trip And Found My Daughter-In-Law Had Taken My Own Bedroom2

Celine had found my checkbook and online banking password in my desk while I was away. She told Patrick I had asked to look at senior communities, so he hadn’t questioned the brochures on the kitchen counter. She never told him about the application. Every box in that row held a piece of my life, labeled for storage. With me gone, she planned to take the master bedroom, turn the guest room into an office, and slowly take over the house.

Patrick walked straight into the house. I followed and stood in the hallway while he asked his wife, very quietly, whether she had signed his name and mine. He never once raised his voice. Celine started crying, then shouting, then insisted she had only been trying to plan for my future. Patrick picked up the folder, set it on the new white bed, and told her the conversation was over.

I called my bank that evening and reported the withdrawal. I also changed every password I own. Willow Creek refunded the deposit the next morning once they saw the forged signatures, and they filed their own report. Celine packed two suitcases that weekend and moved in with her sister across town. Patrick stayed with me and apologized for not noticing sooner. He and Celine are separated now, and he is deciding, carefully, what comes next.

The following Saturday, Patrick and two of his friends carried my mahogany bed back up the stairs. He repainted the bedroom peach himself, and I put every photograph back on the dresser. He cried a little when we found his baby pictures in the last box. The white platform bed is in the garage now. Patrick says he’ll sell it. Honestly, I like it right where it is, a reminder of who decides what happens in this house.
