My Sister Told My Children They Were Irritating At Our Father’s Birthday Dinner Last Week2

He told me everything on the porch. After Mom died, he started betting online to fill the quiet nights. By the time he realized how deep he was, he owed nearly forty thousand dollars. He had sold Mom’s piano to cover part of it. Darcy found out and quietly paid off the rest, then held it over him every day since. Whenever he disagreed with her, she reminded him who had saved his house.

He also told me Darcy had planned to put the whole dinner on my card from the start, including bottles of wine she ordered after we left. Ending up with the bill himself, in front of his brother and sister-in-law, was the moment he finally understood what he had let her become. Aunt Marla told me later that Dad left the restaurant without saying a word to Darcy. He said he was done paying for peace with his grandchildren’s feelings.

Then he opened the hardware store bag. Inside were a wooden post, a bag of cement, and birdseed. He asked Jonah and Lila if they would help him put up their birdhouse in his backyard that afternoon. Jonah looked at me first. I nodded. Dad knelt down on my porch and apologized to both of them, and to me, without a single excuse. Lila hugged him first. Then Jonah.

Dad joined a support group that month and paid me back the $900 deposit from his own savings. He also told Darcy he would repay her on a schedule, but that she no longer decided who sat at his table. She hasn’t spoken to either of us since. The blue birdhouse hangs from a post in Dad’s yard now, and every morning, he sends the twins a photo of whoever is visiting. Usually it’s cardinals. Lila named the boldest one Grandpa Junior.
