He Took Our Baby’s Crib for His Mistress Until His Stepmom Knocked With a Card

My husband left me for his pregnant mistress and took our baby’s crib on the way out. Buy a new one, he said. They would need it for their baby. I stood in the empty nursery and did not cry until the door closed. Last week someone knocked. I opened it and froze. It was my husband’s stepmom. We had never been close when I was married to her stepson. I was surprised she had come at all.

She handed me a banking card and said she could not live with what he had done. The card was in my name. She had moved money from an account she controlled, the one he had been drawing from for years without asking. She said the mistress was not pregnant. The story had been a way to force a clean exit and take what he wanted from the house. She had the crib in the back of her car. He had left it at her place when the other woman changed her mind about the room.

I did not invite her in at first. She stood on the step and explained that she had watched him treat people as temporary for most of his adult life, and that she was finished funding it. The card was not a gift with conditions. It was the portion of his expected inheritance she had already redirected, and the account was closed to him. She asked only that I use it for the baby and for whatever the house still needed.

I took the card. We carried the crib back upstairs together. She stayed long enough to help me put the sheets on. He called that night, angry about the account. I let it ring. The nursery looked the way it had before he left, and the card was in the drawer beside the monitor.
