The Whole Fellowship Hall Turned To Stare At A Boy Who Never Said A Word

Jonah Pruitt crossed that fellowship hall with his fists clenched at his sides, past the pie table, past Pastor Hale, past a hundred staring faces. Caleb was shaking so hard I could feel it through his shoulder. I wanted to pull him behind me, but Walt’s hand settled on my arm and held it there. My husband did not look surprised. He looked like a man who had been waiting three months for this exact moment.

Jonah stopped one foot from my grandson. His jaw was tight, his eyes were red, and the whole room had quit breathing. “It was you,” he said, his voice cracking. “All of it.” Caleb whispered, “Please don’t be mad.” Then Jonah pulled a folded paper from his pocket, soft from handling, and held it up. Walt leaned close. “Honey,” he murmured, “I need to tell you something.”
