His Mother Said the Baby Was a Mistake Then Returned Five Years Later Admitting She Lied

My boyfriend left when I was three months pregnant. The next day his mother stood on my step and said the baby was a mistake, that I had ruined her son’s life, and that he never wanted to see me again. I did not argue. I closed the door and raised my son alone for five years. There were nights the rent was late and mornings I counted coins for milk. I told the boy his father had chosen not to stay.

Then she came back. She stood in the same doorway and said she had lied. My hands shook when she showed me the phone. The screen was filled with messages from her son, years of them, asking for an address, a photo, a way to send money. She had blocked the number. She had told him I moved and wanted nothing to do with him. He had been looking the whole time.

I made her sit at the kitchen table while my son was at school. She said she had been afraid the baby would pull him away from the life she wanted for him. She said the lie got easier the longer it lasted. I did not ask her to stay. I asked for his number and for every message she had kept.

He answered on the first ring. His voice broke when he heard mine. He had a job, a small apartment, and a drawer full of unsent cards. We met the following Saturday in a park, and my son walked up to a man who already knew his middle name. The five years were gone. The lie that stole them was still sitting on my table in the form of a phone she had finally unlocked.
