The Manager Chose The Bigger Customer Over My Mother And Never Expected What Happened Next

The manager’s finger trembled on the yellowed page. I leaned over the counter and saw five numbers printed in faded blue ink, matching the ones Mom had written, beside a name I knew from the old photograph in our hallway: Harold Lawson. Above it, in the manager’s father’s handwriting, were two words underlined three times. The manager read them aloud in a whisper. “Silent partner.”

Mom folded her hands on the counter. “Walter told Harold that if his son ever forgot what this store owed us, I should bring the numbers,” she said. The manager stepped back, his face gray. Behind us, the front door opened, and the commercial buyer walked in, holding a purchase order. “Mr. Dunn,” he said, glancing at the pallet. “I’m here for my feed, and I’d like to discuss buying the entire store.” The manager looked at Mom, and Mom smiled.
