Adrian stood frozen in the doorway while Vanessa clutched the wall as if the floor might tilt again. My living room was gone. The sofa, the armchair, the lace curtains, the shelves of photographs, every piece had vanished, leaving pale squares on the walls where my life used to hang.
I rose slowly and walked to them. In the middle of the bare floor lay one thick folder, and my son’s name was written across it in my own handwriting. Adrian crouched and opened it with shaking hands. His face lost its color on the first page. Vanessa leaned over his shoulder, read a single line, and whispered, “You told me she would never find out.” Adrian looked up at me, and for the first time in his life, he had nothing to say.
