A Humble Surgeon Lets Her Fiancé’s Family Underestimate Her Until Fate Puts a Life in Her Hands

The charge nurse looked at Marguerite and said, simply, “This is Dr. Whitmore. She’s our chief of surgery. She’ll be operating on your husband.” The correction of the name was accidental, the nurse assuming I was already family, but the effect was seismic. Marguerite’s mouth opened. No sound came out. Nathan stepped forward and took his mother gently by the shoulders. “Mom,” he said quietly, “Adeline isn’t a floor nurse. She’s the chief surgeon at St. Cecilia. I promise you that.” Then I turned toward Operating Room Three, and behind me I heard, for the first time, Marguerite Whitmore say my name, my real title, in a voice that had gone very small. “Doctor. Please.”
