The stranger’s question hung in the air, and I watched my brother’s face come apart. “She, she did agree,” he stammered. “This is just paperwork.” But the man in the doorway was already shaking his head, his jaw tight. “You told me this was a clean sale. A willing seller. You showed me a signed authorization.” He looked at me, then back at my brother. “That’s her signature on the folder you gave me. She just told all of us she never wrote it. Do you understand what you’ve involved me in?”
I let the silence do its work. Then I reached over to the counter, where my phone was propped, and turned it to face them. “Before anyone says another word,” I said, “you should know my attorney has been on this call since you walked in. And two officers are parked at the end of the driveway.” My sister-in-law shot to her feet so fast her chair scraped the floor. “Sabrina, you can’t, this is family, this is a misunderstanding.” I looked at her, calm as still water. “It stopped being a misunderstanding the moment you forged my name. But there’s one more thing in that folder you handed me at dinner that you clearly didn’t read closely, and it’s the reason none of you are walking out of here the way you planned.”
