The tall man in the doorway was not a stranger to me, though he was clearly a legend to everyone else in that ballroom. He was the CEO of the very investment firm Chelsea’s new in-laws had spent months trying to court, the man whose backing their family business desperately needed. And he was walking, past the head table, past the gasping executives, straight toward the trash bins at the back of the room. Straight toward my husband.

You don’t answer your phone anymore.” Then, loud enough for the frozen room to hear, “The board won’t move on the acquisition until you sign off. You’re still the majority partner. Nothing happens without you.” The wine glass in Chelsea’s hand trembled. My mother’s practiced smile had gone rigid. Two hundred guests turned, slowly, to look at the man in worn boots and a rain-soaked jacket seated beside the catering entrance, the man they had been served leftovers to avoid. Nathan set down his napkin, stood, and finally spoke, calm as ever. “Actually,” he said, “before we discuss any of that, I think my wife’s family has something they’d like to explain.”
