When I pulled into the driveway, I understood immediately why the couple’s confidence had evaporated. Standing beside my grandpa were two people: a uniformed sheriff’s deputy and a sharp-looking woman in a blazer holding a leather folder. Grandpa gave me a small, calm nod. “Morning,” he said, as if we were meeting for coffee instead of a confrontation. The husband stood in the doorway in his robe, his face already shifting from irritation to unease as he looked between the deputy and the folder.
“You told me I was just one old carpenter working alone,” Grandpa said mildly to the man. “That was mostly true. But I’ve never worked without a contract, son. Fifty years, never once.” He gestured to the woman in the blazer. “This is my attorney. And you’ll remember that paperwork you signed yesterday, the one you didn’t read?” The wife appeared behind her husband, coffee cup in hand, the color draining from her face. “That document wasn’t just an acknowledgment that you refused to pay,” Grandpa went on. “Combined with our signed contract, it’s the cleanest evidence of breach a small claims court will ever see. But that’s not even the part you’re going to care about most.” He smiled. “Show them the other document, please.”
