My phone rang while I was unpacking the last box in my new apartment. It was not my father’s number. It was the Calder Hotels vice president, the man who had handed me his card twenty feet from a demonstration my family had credited to my brother. “This is Grant Whitmore from Calder,” he said. “I’m standing in your father’s showroom, and nothing works. Your name is on every panel and on the proposal as director of integrated controls. So I’ll ask you directly. Are you the person who actually built this system?”
I sat down on the edge of my new bed in the Highlands, the morning light coming through windows that belonged to no one but me. “Yes,” I said. “Everything you saw work last week was mine. The licenses, the server, the programming, all of it, paid for out of my own pocket for four years.” There was a pause on the line, the kind a careful man takes before making a decision. Then Grant said the words that turned my father’s worst morning into the beginning of my best year. “Then I think we’ve been talking to the wrong Harper this whole time. Would you be willing to meet with me, without your father in the room?”
