I took Daniel to an all-night diner because neither of us could bear to be near the family. Over cold coffee, he laid his phone on the table and showed me the debts. Rebecca had run up nearly ninety thousand dollars in charges he had never seen, all under a financing account he supposedly co-signed. “I never signed anything,” he whispered. “But it’s my name, my nursing license attached to it.” I felt the same cold recognition I’d felt reading my own credit report. The forged signatures. The phantom loans. The LLC called Horizon Vital.
I opened my laptop right there in the booth and pulled up the state business registration. Horizon Vital listed Rebecca as sole managing member, but there was a second document filed the same week, a financing agreement I had never seen. I scrolled to the signature page, and my stomach turned to ice. There, listed as co-guarantors, were both my name and Daniel’s, forged in the same careless hand. Then I saw the account the loan proceeds had been routed to, and I understood the whole machine at once. “Daniel,” I said slowly, turning the screen toward him. “They didn’t just cheat on us. Look at whose name is really underneath all of this.”
