My phone rang before Mom even reached her car. I let it go to voicemail, then watched three more calls stack up in under two minutes. When the texts started, they were exactly what I expected. “Something is wrong with the card. Fix it immediately.” Then, “I’m standing in the parking lot like a fool. Call me.” Not once did she ask about Chloe. Not once did the words “I’m sorry” appear.
