The officer held both papers side by side in the morning sun, his eyes moving between them slowly. My folder held the certified will, the recorded deed, and the probate order, every page stamped and dated by the county. Vanessa’s single sheet trembled slightly in her hand, and for the first time that morning, her confident smile began to waver at the edges.
“Ma’am,” the officer said to my sister, “where did you get this document?” Vanessa lifted her chin. “My mother had it drawn up. It’s a transfer of ownership. The house is mine now.” The officer read her paper again, then looked at the date printed near the bottom. Something in his expression shifted. He glanced at my mother, then back at Vanessa, and lowered the page. “This is a problem,” he said quietly. “A serious one. Do you understand what you’re actually holding right now?” My mother’s face went pale, and I finally understood why she had never wanted the documents examined too closely.
