The house he walked back into was not the one he had left. There were no dirty bottles on the counter, no laundry piled on the couch, no stressed wife pacing with a crying baby on each shoulder. Instead, the living room was spotless and quiet, and in the center of it sat two neatly packed suitcases, mine and the girls’. His fishing gear was still slung over his shoulder when he stopped, keys dangling from his hand, trying to understand what he was seeing.
I was sitting calmly at the kitchen table with a folder in front of me and the twins asleep, for once, in their playpen. “Welcome home,” I said, and my voice did not shake the way it had five days earlier. Trevor set his bag down slowly. “What is all this?” he asked. I slid the folder across the table toward him, the same way he had slid his excuses at me the night he left. “Sit down,” I said. “There’s something you need to read before you say anything else.”
