Inside the box were documents. Not my documents. Photocopies of my property deed, my bank statements, my late husband’s life insurance paperwork, all arranged in neat labeled folders. Beneath them sat a printed letter on the stationery of a law office I had never contacted, addressed to Camille, discussing the process of establishing “power of attorney over an aging parent showing signs of decline.” My hands went cold. The redecorated bedroom had never been about lighting or space. It was one small piece of a much larger arrangement, one that required me to look confused, displaced, and easy to manage.
I stood in that garage beside my exiled mahogany bed and understood exactly what I was looking at. Someone had been building a case that I could no longer care for myself. I lifted the letter closer and read the date at the top. It had been written eight days before my trip, while I was still cooking dinners for the very woman who signed it. Then I heard a car pull into the driveway, and through the garage window I saw my son Nathan step out, holding a folder identical to the ones at my feet.
