I gathered my purse, walked to the door, and paused with my hand on the frame. “You inherited millions from your uncle,” I said, my voice steady. “You should really read the will more carefully.” His smile flickered. The younger woman glanced at him, the first crack of uncertainty crossing her polished face. My husband, Gerald, gave a short laugh. “The money’s mine, Beatrice. Signed and settled. Don’t embarrass yourself.”

I smiled back, and for the first time in months I felt no pain at all, only a strange, clean calm. “Your uncle and I spoke every Sunday for thirty years,” I said. “While you ignored his calls, I drove him to his appointments. I sat with him at the end.” I let that settle. “You may want to ask his attorney who the inheritance actually names before you finish celebrating.” Gerald’s face changed. He reached for his phone. And that was the moment the confident smile finally slid off the face of the woman standing in my kitchen.
