Inside the suitcase were documents, dozens of them, held together with rubber bands and clips, and on top lay a photograph of my husband, Gregory, standing beside a warehouse with men I did not recognize. My scream had not been for the papers. It had been for what sat beneath them, a second folder marked with the logo of a company I had believed was Gregory’s legitimate import business. Lucas looked up at me from his knees, his voice breaking. “The night before he threw me out, Mom, I saw something in his office I wasn’t supposed to see. That’s why he got rid of me. Not to make me a man. To make me disappear.”
I held the sleeping newborn tighter. “Whose baby is this, Lucas?” He wiped his eyes. “She belongs to a woman Dad’s people were going to hurt. I got her out. I’ve spent a year hiding, gathering proof.” He pointed at the suitcase. “And that is everything he’s been doing behind your respectable little dinners.”
