From the back panel of that cabinet I drew out a slim gray folder and a small hard drive, and I turned to face them holding both. For five years I had documented everything, not out of suspicion at first, but out of habit, the same meticulous habit that made me the real designer behind every award Nathaniel accepted. Original project files with my name and timestamps. Client emails addressed to me. And, tucked beneath it all, the company financial records I had quietly copied the night I found the hotel invoice labeled client relations. Nathaniel’s face went white. He knew exactly what lived on that drive, because he had spent months pretending it did not exist.

“You want the house, the firm, and my grandmother’s land,” I said. “Tomorrow, my attorney files all of this.” His mother reached for the folder. I stepped back. “That copy is not the only one.” And that was the moment their certainty finally, completely, collapsed.
