I did not raise my voice into that phone. I told Preston Wheeler, calmly, that the police were at his office because the property his clients had purchased had been sold using a forged power of attorney and a signature that was never mine. The whole dining room heard the word forged. Trevor’s beer stopped halfway to his mouth. What none of them understood, not my applauding parents, not my pitying aunt, was who I actually worked for. They thought I filed forms. I did not. My overseas assignment had been with a federal investigative office, and forgery, wire fraud, and the falsification of county-recorded documents were not abstractions to me. They were the exact things I built cases around for a living.

I turned to face the table. “Every secure message on that phone tonight,” I said, “was my own office, confirming what I already suspected the moment I saw the signature.” Trevor set down the beer. “The deed was recorded with a forged power of attorney. That is a felony, Trevor. Several.” My mother whispered my name. I let the silence sit. Then I told them the part that made my father grip the table.
