Early This Morning I Walked into the Bathroom and Found Something on the Floor That Stopped My Heart

Early this morning I walked into the bathroom and found it on the floor. My heart slammed against my ribs the second I saw it. A twisted, dried, alien-looking thing rested on the cold tiles, staring back in awful silence. Every possibility that flashed through my mind was worse than the last—each more grotesque, more intimate, more wrong. I could not look away. I could not breathe. It sat there small enough to ignore yet horrifying enough to consume every thought. I circled it for minutes that felt like hours, afraid to touch it and equally afraid not to.

Was it an organ? Some kind of parasite? Something dropped, discarded, half-alive? The internet offered nothing but more dread. The cat prowling nearby turned the whole room into a crime scene that did not yet make sense. I stood frozen between curiosity and revulsion, the ordinary bathroom suddenly charged with the feeling that something private and terrible had been revealed. The longer I stared, the more the shape seemed to shift between possibilities, none of them comforting.

When I finally picked it up, it crumbled just slightly—light as paper, brittle as ash. The truth arrived not as a scream but as a quiet, devastating recognition. It was a tiny frog, perfectly formed and utterly gone, mummified into a shape almost beyond understanding. It had not died in front of me, yet somehow its absence filled the room. The delicate legs, the outline of a head, the way the body had dried into a single strange object—all of it made the ordinary tiles feel suddenly sacred and sad.

I kept thinking how a life can vanish so completely that when we finally notice it we are left only with a riddle made of what remains. The frog had lived, moved, existed somewhere in the house or just outside it, and then simply stopped. No drama. No witness. Only this small, dried remnant waiting on the bathroom floor for someone to find it and feel the shock of recognition. I set it down carefully, washed my hands, and stood there a moment longer. The room was quiet again. The ordinary world had returned, but it felt slightly thinner, as if a thin layer of mystery had settled over everything and refused to lift.
