The Judge Who Recognized Me From A Highway Crash That Ended My In-Laws’ Lawsuit

The instant Judge Hartley’s eyes met mine, the whole architecture of Cordelia’s plan began to quietly collapse, though Cordelia herself had no idea yet. She was still wearing her triumphant expression, still glancing back at the rows of friends she had invited to watch my humiliation, still certain that a woman who represented herself without a lawyer had already lost. What she did not know was that four years earlier, on a rain-swept interstate, I had knelt in broken glass and leaking fuel and held a stranger’s severed artery closed with my bare hands until the helicopter came. That stranger had a family. That stranger had a career. And that stranger was now sitting at the highest point in the room, wearing black robes, looking at me with the stunned recognition of someone seeing the face that had once been the last thing she saw before losing consciousness.

Judge Hartley set down her fountain pen. In a measured voice, she addressed the court. “Before we proceed, I must disclose a potential conflict for the record, and I will allow either party to request my recusal.” She explained, plainly and professionally, that four years earlier she had been the sole survivor of a highway collision, and that a trauma surgeon had performed roadside field stabilization that had saved her life. Then she looked directly at Cordelia. “The defendant in this matter is that surgeon. I will recuse myself if either party wishes. But I will not sit silently while this court is used to allege that Dr. Seraphina is not a physician, when I am alive today solely because she is one.” The gallery Cordelia had assembled went utterly silent.
