The two men with paperwork were not a threat to me. They were the reason my sister’s eight-month plan was already dead, she just didn’t know it yet. That morning, before any of this, I had finalized something I’d been working toward for weeks. I had accepted an offer on the house. Not out of desperation, but opportunity. A developer had been buying up my quiet street for a new project, and the price they offered was far more than my small three-bedroom home was worth on the open market. I had signed the initial agreement that morning and scheduled the buyer’s representatives to come by that evening to begin the walkthrough and inventory. That was who had just pulled into my driveway.
My sister still didn’t understand. She stood there with a box in her arms, watching the men step through my front door with clipboards, and she asked again, sharper this time, “Why should we stop unpacking?” I let the lead representative answer, because it would land harder coming from a stranger holding official documents. He looked at the hallway full of my sister’s suitcases and children’s bags, then at me, then back at her, and he said the sentence that made her face fall completely. “Ma’am, this property is under a signed purchase agreement. The current owner is closing in thirty days. Nobody is moving in here. Everybody is moving out.”
