The Grandmother They Tried To Bill For A Week Of Free Labor Sent Back An Invoice Of Her Own

Bianca’s scream was not about damage. It was about the professional cleaning van, the grocery delivery truck, and the childcare agency car all parked in her driveway at once, along with a very official-looking invoice taped to her front door. During the night, while she slept, I had made my own arrangements. I had itemized every service I’d provided over seven days at standard market rates, the way she had itemized my “accommodation,” and I had arranged for her to see exactly what her free grandmother had actually been worth. My invoice, printed on the same kind of paper hers was, hung on the door for Marcus to read the moment he stepped out of his truck.

Housekeeping, seven days, deep cleaning of four rooms and two bathrooms: $1,800. Full-time childcare, seven days: $2,100. Meal preparation and grocery shopping, twenty-one meals plus supplies: $900. Laundry service: $400. Total value of services rendered: $5,200. At the bottom, in clear print, I had written: “Less your accommodation invoice of $3,000. Balance owed to Grandmother: $2,200.” Marcus stood in the driveway reading it while Bianca’s face cycled from smug to horrified. And standing beside my own invoice were the professionals I’d hired for that single morning, so that Bianca could see precisely what she had been extracting from me for free, now with a price tag she could not argue with.
