The Mother They Treated Like Hired Help Walked Out With A Secret Worth Everything

I drove through the dark suburbs with my hands steady on the wheel for the first time all night, the ticket riding in my purse on the passenger seat like a quiet companion. I checked into a modest motel off the highway, paid cash, and slept better than I had in three years. In the morning, over weak motel coffee, I called the number on the back of the ticket and then a lawyer whose name I found in the phone book, a woman who specialized in exactly this: helping ordinary people survive sudden fortune without being swallowed by it. Within a week, verified and quiet, the money was real, and it was mine, sitting in an account with only my name on it.

My son had no idea I was gone at first. He assumed I had stormed off to a friend’s and would come crawling back, because I always came back. When three days passed with no laundry done, no babysitter for the grandkids, no mother to bark orders at, the calls started. First annoyed. Then confused.
