The next morning, I did not shout, and I did not call anyone. I made Elliott breakfast, drove him to school like it was any ordinary day, and then I began to work. My first call was to Harold Prewitt, the estate attorney whose notary stamp appeared on the trust agreement in Elliott’s photos. He remembered my father well. When I described what my son had found in the locked cabinet, the line went quiet for a long moment. “Your mother was never supposed to have those originals,” he said carefully. “They were filed with my office. If she’s been concealing certified copies and administering those properties herself, that’s a serious problem for her.”

By that afternoon I had the full picture, and it was worse than the photos suggested. For four years my mother had been collecting rent on two properties that legally belonged to Elliott, depositing it into an account only she controlled. Kendra had known enough to benefit and to look away. The cruise, the exclusion, the cruel note, all of it made a colder kind of sense now. They had built their comfort on money that belonged to a fifteen-year-old boy they treated like a mistake. I sat in the lawyer’s office with my father’s signature in front of me and understood exactly what I had to do before the ship came home.
