The competition ran all afternoon, round after round, and I sat where the parents sat, watching my boys do what they had trained years to do. Theo and Silas were not ordinary competitors. They had swept their regional division, and their names were quietly known among the coaches who followed the circuit. Across the auditorium, I could see Marcus and Sabrina cheering for Caleb, who was talented, genuinely, and made it further than most. But when the final mathematics and science rounds narrowed the field, it was my twins who kept advancing, name after name falling away, until the scoreboard on the enormous screen showed only a handful of finalists left.
Caleb placed fourth. It was an excellent result, and I clapped for him honestly, because he was a child and none of this was his fault. Then the host stepped to the microphone to announce the gold medalists, the two highest overall scorers in the entire state competition. The auditorium hushed. I watched Marcus lean forward in his seat, still not understanding, still waiting to hear his own son’s name. Instead, the host said, “Our first-place gold medalists, with the highest combined score in competition history, Theo and Silas.” And my sons rose from their seats, in their plain navy jackets, and walked toward the stage.
