My husband, Damien, stood frozen in the hallway with a coffee mug halfway to his mouth while his mother shook a folded piece of paper in his face. He looked at me, confused, then back at her. “Take what back?” he asked. Rosalind’s face had gone a blotchy red. “She transferred the house,” she gasped. “She put it in some kind of trust. I called the county office this morning to ask about permits for the renovation, and they told me the ownership changed yesterday afternoon.”
Damien turned to me slowly. I stood in the kitchen doorway, calm in a way I had not felt in years, holding my own copy of the same document. “It’s true,” I said. “I moved the house into a trust for the children yesterday. Neither of us can sell it, borrow against it, or renovate it without a trustee agreeing. I’m the trustee.” Rosalind made a sound like a kettle. Damien set his mug down very carefully. “You did this without telling me,” he said. And that was the moment I had been waiting fifteen years to explain.
