The Changed Gate Code And The Quiet Widow Who Reclaimed Everything Her Daughter Assumed Was Hers

I plugged in my phone, waited for it to wake, and let the messages load without reading a single one. Then I called Vanessa back. She answered before the first ring finished, her voice already frantic. “Mom, oh my God, the gate code isn’t working, the caterer got turned away, Derek’s parents are on their way and the tent people said they were cancelled, what is happening?” I set my coffee down and answered her exactly as calmly as I had two hours earlier. “You told me my husband doesn’t want me there,” I said. “So I’ve made sure you won’t have to see me at all. Not at the ceremony. Not on the property. Not anywhere.”

There was a stunned silence, and then the tears came, the same tears that had worked on me for twenty-five years. Then I said the thing I had been swallowing since the patio, since the velvet box, since the grin on Derek’s face when he turned the key over in his hand. “The wedding is on my land, paid with my money, drinking wine from my vines. If I am too embarrassing to stand in the photographs, then my land, my money, and my vineyard are too embarrassing to host them.” I heard Derek’s voice in the background demand to know what I’d said, and I hung up before Vanessa could hand him the phone.
