My hands shook so hard the paper rattled against the blanket. My children had not left because of parking. They had left because they needed a specific record to exist, a chart that showed I woke from major surgery confused, disoriented, and with no family present to speak for me. An unaccompanied, groggy post-surgical patient was exactly the picture their attorney needed to argue I could no longer manage my own affairs.

Marcus watched me understand it in real time. “The conservatorship would have given them control of your pension, your accounts, and the house,” he said quietly. “Once a judge signs it, getting it reversed can take years and money you don’t have.” I thought of Brandon leaving his office, Rachel and her flowers that never came, Steven and his sales calls, all three of them checking a box rather than sitting at my bedside. Then Marcus pulled a second document from the folder, and his voice dropped lower still. “But they made one mistake, Adrienne. They assumed you’d wake up with no one in your corner. They were wrong.”
