“Ma’am, we’ve been expecting you,” Commander Reyes said, his voice carrying clearly across the stunned family section. I rose from the folding chair, returned his salute with the ease of someone who had done it a thousand times, and heard my mother make a small, choked sound behind me. Reyes did not lower his hand until I lowered mine. “The admiral asked me to personally escort you to the reserved seating,” he continued. “We weren’t certain your schedule would allow you to attend. It’s an honor to have you here.” My father’s mouth had fallen open. Brooke, who moments earlier had questioned whether I counted as family, sat frozen with her phone halfway raised.

Trevor stared at me as though seeing a stranger wearing his sister’s face. He had spent four years being told his sibling was a college dropout who vanished for months and explained nothing. He had never once asked himself why those months lined up with deployments he was too junior to be briefed on. Reyes gestured toward the empty chair near the stage, the one everyone had assumed was a seating error. As I stepped forward, the commander said the words that made the entire tent go silent. “For those who don’t know her, this is Lieutenant Commander Hannah Bennett, Naval Special Warfare. She trained half the men receiving their Tridents today.”
