The Robotics Student Bound For Engineering School Who Found Her Own Life Scheduled Around A Baby Not Yet Born

Dad stared at the legal pad in my hand like he wished he’d hidden it. “That’s just me thinking on paper,” he said. But it wasn’t. It had columns. It had my name under his and Mom’s, my evenings blocked out for a baby that did not exist, my acceptance to Michigan quietly crossed out and replaced with LOCAL SCHOOL FIRST YEAR in his blocky handwriting. Seventeen years of being the daughter who “gets all that technical stuff from me” but never got to matter, and here was the proof, itemized, that my future was just a slot to be filled around the son he was still waiting for.

I set the page down on the island between us. “You already decided,” I said quietly. “You told Aunt Deborah before you told me. You wrote it down before you asked me.” Mom started to say something about family and sacrifice, and Aunt Deborah, to her credit, stayed in the kitchen instead of slipping out, arms folded, watching my father realize the room had turned. That was the night I stopped waiting to be chosen by my own family, and started choosing myself. And I already knew the one thing that would end the argument for good.
