The Woman Whose Family Assigned Bedrooms In Her New House Before She Ever Handed Out A Key

I watched the recording three times. My mother, unlocking a door I never gave her permission to copy. My sister behind her, carrying a tape measure into rooms she had already decided were hers. They had let themselves in two days before my housewarming to measure for furniture, or a tent, or Thanksgiving beds. I did not yet know which, and it did not matter. What mattered was that the quiet house I had bought so I could decide what happened next had already been entered, surveyed, and assigned without a single person asking me.

I set the phone down and felt something settle, cold and clear. This was not going to be solved by another deleted text or another laugh at a ridiculous assumption. I had let every small thing pass because saying no felt unkind, and my silence had been read as a yes to all of it. So the next morning, before the folding tables, before the Christmas bins, before Thanksgiving, I called a locksmith. And then I sat down to write the message my family was never going to laugh off.
