By nightfall, the payments had stopped and my phone had started. Forty-two missed calls stacked up like a confession. The first voicemails were confused. The mortgage company had flagged the canceled payment. The electric account showed a lapse notice. Then the catering company called my father directly to confirm the nine thousand dollar order had been voided, and the confusion curdled into panic. My sister Bridget texted in all capitals, demanding to know what I had done, as if I had broken into his accounts rather than simply closed my own wallet.

I did not answer any of them that night. I made myself tea and let the phone buzz itself into silence on the counter. Around ten, my father finally left a voicemail in a voice I had never heard from him, stripped of the cold customer-service flatness. “Adrienne, please. There’s been a misunderstanding.” I almost laughed. For six years I had been the misunderstanding they were happy to keep as long as it paid the bills. But there was one thing left in the shared folder they had locked me out of, one thing I opened the next morning that turned my quiet exit into something much larger.
