“Vous avez raison, Philippe,” I said, in the effortless Lyonnais French I had not spoken aloud in thirty years. “Grandchildren should absolutely understand where they come from.” The table went silent so fast I heard the fireplace crackle. Hélène’s wineglass stopped halfway to her lips. Philippe’s fork froze above his plate. “So allow me to make sure they will,” I continued, unhurried, every vowel precise. “They will come from a woman who moved to Lyon alone at twenty-two, with one suitcase and no plan, and who built a life there over eight years while learning your language from landlords who were far less polite than I am being now.”

Hélène’s face had drained of its careful warmth. “You… you speak French.” “Fluently,” I said. “Since before your son was born. I have understood every word said at this table tonight. The ‘simple’ comment. The ‘small life.’ Philippe’s hope that Luca would not be burdened by a wife with no cultural foundation.” I turned to my daughter, whose fork had clattered to her plate. “Vivienne, would you like to know what your future in-laws have been discussing in the language they assumed protected them?” Vivienne’s eyes were wide. Across the table, Luca had already put his head in his hands, because he had heard it all too, and had been the only one at that table brave enough to object.
