They Stole My Card For A Luxury Vacation, So I Sold The House From Under Them

My father’s hands shook as he opened the folder. The first page was the deed. Not to the house they were standing in front of, the one with the SOLD banner, but to a different property entirely. His name was nowhere on it. Mine was. “This house was never yours, Dad,” I said quietly. “You transferred it to me four years ago, remember? When the business was failing and you were terrified the creditors would take it. You begged me to put it in my name so they couldn’t touch it. I saved it. And you’ve been living in it, rent-free, ever since, telling everyone it was yours.” His face went from gray to ash. “You wouldn’t sell your parents’ home.” “I didn’t,” I said. “I sold my home. Bridget shoved between us. “So where are we supposed to go? You can’t just put us on the street.” I turned to her, and for the first time in years I felt completely calm. “You spent one hundred fifteen thousand dollars of my money on a beach vacation and called me cheap in a voicemail. You want to talk about the street?” The delivery truck finally reached the curb and stopped. It was not a moving truck. Painted on the side were the words of a local auction and estate company, and two men climbed out with clipboards. Bridget’s face drained of color. “What,” she whispered, “is that?”
