Everyone stared at him. Nobody in the lobby made a sound. Martin set the phone down slowly. Grandpa set his cap on the counter and spoke to Kayla kindly. He told her that most of the money in that building came from people who wore muddy boots, and that the cleanest-looking customers were sometimes the ones with the emptiest accounts. Then he asked her to finish his withdrawal. Her hands trembled as she counted out the twenty-four hundred dollars.

Before we left, Grandpa invited her to the farm that Saturday. She showed up, to my surprise, in borrowed boots. Grandpa let her ride in the combine with the new belt we installed, and she watched a whole field of soybeans pour into the grain cart. She ate supper with us and asked a hundred questions about corn prices. At the end of the day, she apologized to him, properly, with tears in her eyes.

Martin started customer-respect training for every employee at the bank after that, and he hung a framed photo of Grandpa’s first tractor in the lobby. He also drove out to the farm the following week to apologize personally. Rory apologized too, the next time Grandpa came in. Kayla asked to be the one who handled Grandpa’s account from then on. He agreed. She never once asked him what his money was for again.

Two years later, Kayla became assistant branch manager. She drove out to the farm for Grandpa’s eighty-eighth birthday, still wearing those borrowed boots, and gave him a card that said, Thank you for not letting them fire me. She told everyone at the party the story herself. Grandpa laughed louder than anyone. He kept the card on the kitchen windowsill beside his old feed-store cap. He still never changes his clothes before he goes into town.
