The attorney gathered his papers and quietly told my parents he was withdrawing from the case, then asked Judge Avery for the name of the detective she had contacted. Dad didn’t say a word. He just stared at the moving truck. My grandparents had seen this coming. Three years before they died, they discovered Dad had borrowed against their names once already. That was why they placed the house in a trust for me and left everyone else nothing.

Grandma had told me the truth the summer before she passed, sitting on this same porch. She asked me to keep every letter and bank statement, and to call Judge Avery the moment my family came for the house. I had kept every one. Judge Avery squeezed my shoulder. When Gabrielle saw the stack of documents in the judge’s briefcase, she sat down on the porch steps and started to cry.

The fraudulent transfer was voided within two weeks. Dad was charged with forgery and filing false documents, and he accepted a plea agreement that included repaying the old loans himself. Gabrielle swore she hadn’t known the signatures were forged, and the investigators believed her. Mom never said a word to me about any of it. The movers left without carrying a single box. Judge Avery said Grandma would have been proud of how calm I stayed.

Gabrielle came back alone a few months later and apologized on the same porch where she had smiled at me. I let her in. We made Grandma’s chicken and dumplings together, the way she taught us when we were little. Judge Avery comes for dinner sometimes too. She always brings pie. I still live in the house, and every Sunday, I set an extra plate, just in case someone in my family is ready to come home honestly.
