Wayne’s shoulders dropped. He couldn’t look at me. He admitted it right there on the gravel. He had borrowed heavily to start a contracting business that failed. Hollis Development had paid him forty thousand dollars up front in exchange for delivering my signature by Friday. If he didn’t, he owed it all back. The concrete truck came from a Hollis job site. Their manager had told him old men always fold. He thought fear would work faster than patience.

The deputies charged him with unlawful restraint and attempted coercion. The porch camera recording made everything clear, especially the part where he told me I would run out of food. The concrete truck was towed away before noon. The county opened an investigation into Hollis Development as well. Within a month, the company withdrew from every land deal it had pending in the county and quietly fired the manager who had approached Wayne.

Ruth flew in from Arizona the next day and stayed for two weeks. With her help, I signed the land into a conservation easement in her mother’s name. No developer can ever build on it now. Not while I’m alive, and not after. Earl drove over that evening with a casserole his wife made. The oak tree, the garden, and the rope swing will stay exactly where Loretta and I put them.

Wayne accepted a plea deal with probation and counseling. Eight months later, he called and asked if he could come by. I said yes, on one condition: he would park at the bottom of the hill and walk up. He did. He apologized before he reached the porch. We replanted Loretta’s garden together that afternoon. His children come every summer now. They swing on that old rope. And I put the satellite phone back in the closet, just in case.
