Jessica’s voice broke by the second line, but she kept reading. I had written that every can began the day a grandchild was born, when I dropped in a few dollars from Howard’s pension and promised myself I would never spend them. Over the years I added the life insurance I never touched and the money from selling my wedding set. The coffee cans were Howard’s idea, kept in our garage during our poorest years, and I never learned to save any other way.

The cans held a bank book for each child: twenty-six thousand dollars for Ethan, twenty-two thousand for Chloe, and eighteen thousand for each twin. The money could only be spent on education, and I had named myself guardian until each of them turned eighteen. “I never bought you a console, Ethan,” the letter said, “because I wanted you to have a future instead of a toy.” Jessica lowered the page with trembling hands, and for once the kitchen held no sneer.

Greg finally spoke. He admitted he had watched his wife belittle me for years and said nothing, because silence felt easier than a fight. Then he apologized, quietly, in front of everyone. Jessica sank onto a stool with mascara running down her cheeks. She confessed that her “married down” jokes came from her own insecurity, and that she wrote the list only to feel in control. She had never imagined the woman she called a burden had spent seventeen years building her children’s futures.

I did not gloat. I told Jessica that Chloe and the twins deserved apologies too, and she went upstairs and brought them down, hugging each one and saying sorry honestly. Ethan set the twins’ can on the table, its lid still clean from his sleeve. We all stayed for cake, and every birthday since, the grandchildren arrive with a coffee can of their own, filled with quarters, and the whole family sits down together at last.
